Where is SFBAC-NYLT being held in 2012?

In 2012, SFBAC-NYLT is being held at Cutter Scout Reservation. This was necessitated due to scheduling conflicts at Wente Scout Reservation. There are several changes as a result of this:

  • Slightly later Session - June 25 to June 30
  • A Monday start
  • Transporation TO and from NYLT is the responsibility of the parents. In previous years, fees included transporation to NYLT.

What is SFBAC-NYLT?

SFBAC-NYLT is a week long outdoor experience for present and future youth leaders, designed to help a Scoutmaster and Venturer Advisor in his responsibility to train his youth in being better leaders and in maintaining a youth-run Program. It is based on the BSA National Youth Leadership Training Program. NYLT replaces the course curriculum previously known as Junior Leader Training (JLT).

The Course focuses on teaching advanced leadership and planning skill in an intense, team-building atmosphere. Participants will be regularly challenged to accomplish time-sensitive tasks using the team-building and leadership skills taught in the Course. Participants will also have opportunities to improve their outdoor skills and apply them.

Starting in 2011, NYLT became available to BOTH Boy Scouts and Venturers. Both male and female Venturers may attend NYLT.

The NYLT program runs 4 separate Courses concurrently. Each Course has a maximum of 48 participants, broken down into 8 Teams (Patrols) of 6 each. While the Courses happen simultaneously at the same facility, most of Course activities are independent of the other Courses. To Top

What is the purpose of SFBAC-NYLT?

SFBAC-NYLT has six major aims:

  • To give participants the confidence and knowledge to run the troop/crew program;
  • To teach and practice key leadership skills and relate these skills to the responsibilities in the youth's home unit;
  • To give youth the opportunity to share ideas and experiences that other youth have found to be successful and useful in their home units;
  • Give each youth a varied experience with emphasis on the patrol/team method and new ways to teach outdoor skills in a fun atmosphere back in his home unit.
  • To create an atmosphere where youth will experience "Scouting at its best".
  • To enhance the relationship between the participant and his home unit's scoutmaster/advisor. To Top

Is SFBAC-NYLT complete after camp?

No, SFBAC-NYLT is a two phase program. Phase 1 is the training week at Cutter Scout Reservation. Phase 2 is by each youth applying the leadership skills in his/her home unit after the youth completes the course. The home unit's Scoutmaster or advisor certifies suitable application of the leadership skills. This application phase can be completed at any time but we have a Recognition ceremony the third Thursday of November (each year) to recognize all youth that have completed their challenges. The home unit's Scoutmaster/Advisor approves the completion of these challenges by e-mailing a short note to the Course Director stating that the youth has demonstrated leadership thru applying the SFBAC-NYLT skills. Please also summarize what the participant did to demonstrate leadership. E-mail this to: Info@sfbac-nylt.org. The Scoutmaster/Advisor may also change the challenges as needed to meet the unit's needs. To Top

Is SFBAC-NYLT a week at summer camp?

No. SFBAC-NYLT is a leadership training course in an outdoor environment. There are no rank advancement nor Merit Badge opportunities during the week. The purpose of this course is to develop leadership skills that youth will use in their home units and throughout their lives. To Top

Where is SFBAC-NYLT?

SFBAC-NYLT is held, in 2012, at Cutter Scout Reservation in Boulder Creek, California. Transportation TO Cutter Scout Reservation is the responsibility of the Parents. Due to the new location in 2012, transportation to NYLT is NOT included this year. Also, Parents or scout leaders must pick up their scouts after the course on Saturday (see next section). To Top

Please don’t arrive any earlier than 6:45 PM. You will not be able to socialize with the participants until after the ceremony. This ceremony takes about 1 hour. All participants can leave as soon as the ceremony has been completed. (Note that Staff must remain overnight until all SFBAC-NYLT equipment has been stored). How can I contact a participant?

In case of an emergency, call the Cutter Ranger at 831-338-2990. He will get a message to the SFBAC-NYLT Staff and we will then get the message to the participant.

If you would like to mail letters (which everybody just love to receive), the camp address is:

Youth's name
SFBAC-NYLT
Cutter Scout Reservation
2500 China Grade
Boulder Creek, CA 95006

Due to the schedule that is run at SFBAC-NYLT, parents and friends are discouraged because of disruption to the program and the difficulty in providing make-up sessions. Adult leaders who want to observe the program are welcomed. Please e-mail us of your intention to visit (info@sfbac-nylt.org). To Top

Who should attend SFBAC-NYLT?

Boy Scout participants must be thirteen years of age by October 1, 2012, be in a position of leadership (Senior Patrol Leaders, Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders, Patrol Leaders or who will be candidates in the near future) and be First Class rank before May 15th.

Venturers participants should be in a position of responsibility or expect to undertake one shortly. They should have taken the Introduction to Leadership Skills in their home unit (Crew Leadership Training). Both male and female Venturers are welcomed and encoraged to apply.

The youth must want to attend SFBAC-NYLT and have the enthusiasm and desire to participate in this learning experience. Because SFBAC-NYLT requires some camping skills, participants must have had at least one long-term camp experience (such as summer camp) in order to attend. To Top

Who should not attend SFBAC-NYLT?

  • Youth with significant homesickness issues or discipline problems,
  • Youth who have little camping experience,
  • Youth who have never camped without a parent in attendance, or
  • Youth who are generally not leaders counted on by your unit.

SFBAC-NYLT will not “fix” your problem youth and cannot change a personthat do not want to learn or participate. SFBAC-NYLT will nourish the leadership ability of the youth that you count on to run your troop. SFBAC-NYLT will not help youth with discipline problems or homesick problems.

Participants with discipline issues will only disrupt efforts to train other youth as leaders and will likely be sent home without a refund. Removal of a youth from the program is not done lightly and is reviewed thru a multi-level process and ultimately thru the Course Director. If a participant is removed from the program, his/her parents will be called and they will need to pick the youth up at camp. All of our staff members are very busy training leaders during course week and do not have time to tend to youth who are not mature enough to attend a week-long leadership camp.

If you have any questions about the appropriateness of any youth attending SFBAC-NYLT, please contact the Course Director at info@sfbac-nylt.org. To Top

When does registration close?

The Registration closes when the Courses fill up. The current enrollment limit is 192 youth. This is broken down into 4 separate concurrent courses of about 48 each. Once that limit is reached, all other youth will go on a waiting list. The 2011 course was filled as of May 10th! Register as early as possible to avoid problems and potential disappointment.

What Paperwork is due and when is it due?

Last day to register is on May 13, 2012. After that date, Scouts are taken IF space is available. Also note that if the session fills earlier, we will close it with 8 youth on the waitlist. No applications can be accepted after Orientation. At Orientation, you need to bring a signed Code of Conduct and an Annual Health and Medical Record (SFBAC form available at: www.sfbac.org). These are also available off of the Orientation page.

Best way to register is on the web at: www.brownsea-nylt.org or www.sfbac-nylt.org. You must get your Scoutmaster or Advisor's approval prior to registering. Is the home Scoutmaster/Advisor involved?

Absolutely! SFBAC-NYLT is designed to enhance the youth's relationship with his home Scoutmaster/Advisor. The home unit leader coordinates and encourages the youth's completion of his/her Phase 2 challenges. The home leader works with the youth upon his return to identify 3 areas where the participant can apply his SFBAC-NYLT skills. See Bringing SFBAC-NYLT Home on the Home Page. Upon completion, the leader e-mails Info@sfbac-nylt.org, stating that the youth has completed the goals that the leader and youth had mutually agreed upon. To Top

How will Youth live during SFBAC-NYLT?

Participants will be placed into a patrol/team consisting of six youth from many Districts and even from other Councils. Each patrol/team has its own site with it’s own stoves and cooking equipment. The participants will prepare their own meals. Tents are provided with 2 Scouts sharing a tent.
