Scoutmasters: For SFBAC-NYLT to be effective, we need your help. This page is meant to give you a short summary of what to expect and how you can help.

Youth Selection: SFBAC-NYLT is meant as a training course. It is not summer camp.Scouts you send should be mature enough that they can come back to your unit and be in a meaningful leadership position.

Do Send:
Do send Scouts that you expect to take on a leadership position in your Troop.
Do send mature scouts; sometimes having a Scout wait a year before going to Brownsea is better for him and the Troop.
Do send Scouts that will be a credit to your Troop.

Do Not Send:

Do not send Scouts that you need to keep an eye on on your Troop outings.
Do not send Scouts that have not had at least one year of summer camp.
Do not send Scouts that do not want to go.
Do not send your trouble-maker in hopes that Brownsea will fix him in a week.

What is Expected: The Scout will be learning the basic leadership skills outlined in What is NYLT? For learning to be most effective, the skills need to be applied. This, in addition to the selection process, is where the Scoutmaster helps most.

Goals to Complete: Either going into Brownsea, or coming out of Brownsea, the Scout should have some ideas on how to make the Troop better. These need to be agreed upon by both the Scoutmaster and the Scout. The Scout should have a list of 3 goals to complete.

Completion: We encourage Scoutmasters to work with their Brownsea Scouts to have the Goals sized so that they are completed in the October-November timeframe. When the Scout has demonstrated leadership thru these agreed-upon goals, then E-mail SFBAC-NYLT at Info@Brownsea-NYLT.org and state what the Scout had done to demonstrate leadership.

How NYLT is integrated with other Youth Training programs:

SFBAC-NYLT, formerly known as Brownsea-NYLT, is offered by San Francisco Bay Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. The session starts on June 20, the 3rd Sunday of June in 2010, and is open to Boy Scouts from all Councils.
