National Youth Leadership Training A week-long training course, starting the 3rd Sunday in June.

What is Brownsea?

A once in a lifetime, youth leadership training experience!

The San Francisco Bay Area Council offers a high-level, high-energy youth leadership training: the National Youth Leadership Training Conference, known as Brownsea-NYLT. This Web page describes the Brownsea National Youth Leadership Training. This Course replaces the Junior Leadership Training (JLT) Course with an updated Leadership curriculum that reflects the current approaches to leadership including those taught in the adult Woodbadge Course.

Scouts should register on-line, but a printed copy of the confirmation page, with fee payment, must be submitted to the council. If you can not register on-line, a registration packet may be obtained by contacting the Council Service Center at 510-577-9000.

Most Scouts that qualify, according to Council records, should receive a mailer in February. It will include instructions on how to obtain an application.

REQUIREMENTS

• Be at least 13 years old by October 1 of the year of the course (13 by October, 2007 for the June 2007 Course)
• Be at least the rank of First Class Scout. 
• Have the desire to be a troop leader.
• Obtain Scoutmaster's recommendation and parents' approval on the Brownsea Registration Form. When you register online, that approval can be indicated on the confirmation page.
• BSA Personal Health and Medical Record - Class 1-2 -- San Francisco Bay Area Council Version -- and SFBAC Medication Form. 

Note: Scouts from other Councils are welcomed to attend. There is NO restriction on the number of Scouts that are allowed from a troop, subject to being qualified and based on maximum Course size. We will limit the enrollment to 144 this year. Also note that, in the last 3 years, the Course has filled up and Scouts who have not registered by the April 30th deadline have been put on the waiting lists.

PROGRAM

The Brownsea - NYLT experience has two major parts: Training and Application.

• Training
: One (1) week at Wente Scout Reservation, Willets, CA. This Training starts on the 3^rd Sunday in June.
• Learn the NYLT leadership skills. 
• Make a list of ways those skills can help you and your home Troop.
  
• Application: With your Scoutmaster, review what you have learned at Brownsea
  • Get his support. Apply the leadership skills to demonstrate the knowledge gained at Brownsea. In November, attend the formal Brownsea Completion Conference. There you can review skills and receive the Brownsea - NYLT shoulder strip and certificate.

Brownsea Objectives

• To provide formal, quality training for Youth Leaders 
• To reinforce the Troop Structure 
• To lead by example, using the principals of the Scout Oath and Law 
• To build those skills required by Youth Leaders for effective leadership of a Boy Scout Troop, and 
• To have fun while learning, and
• To have more fun while learning!
